FAQs

How is YTA different from other sports programs?

With an emphasis on tennis, we provide a unique academic enrichment program, including life-skills, leadership, character development and sportsmanship to girls and boys, ages 8–18.

Where are tennis and academic classes held?

After school programs are held Monday through Friday and we have five locations in the Bay Area:

Check locations for directions and hours of operation. After-school, summer tennis and academic enrichment programs are held at all locations. Check locations for specific times.

My child has never played tennis. Can they still join the program?

Yes! We welcome kids of all skill levels and place them in the appropriate groups so they’ll get the most out of the program.

What if my child already knows how to play tennis?

That’s great. We love encouraging kids to improve their skills, no matter what level. Players can also try out for Junior Team Tennis so they can compete with others.

How much do classes cost?

YTA is a free program, however each student is required to be registered online and participate in the USTA Foundation NJTL Essay Contest presented by Deloitte. NJTL participants are asked to write an essay answering a thought-provoking question requiring research and analysis.

How do I register for classes?

Registration is completed online. Select your location and follow the links to registration. YTA follows the calendar year for registration purposes and runs programming year round. Participants need only fill out one registration form per year per student (some locations may require an additional summer registration).

What if my child can’t attend all of the classes?

We understand that students and families have many obligations and commitments, but we require students to attend at least two sessions per week, in order to get the most out of the program. If students have conflicts, please talk to the Site Director to coordinate your schedules.

What equipment or special clothing is needed?

All tennis equipment is provided free of charge. Appropriate clothing for general outdoor sports activity should be worn, including athletic shoes. If your student needs equipment, clothing, shoes, please let us know! We have some donated equipment in our office that might work for you.

What aged students can participate in YTA programs?

We accept students ages 8-18 in the programs.

Will my child be able to play on a tennis team or in tournaments?

YTA offers students the opportunity to try out for Junior Team Tennis and to participate in local tournaments. Selection for Junior Team Tennis is based on tennis skills, and other factors, such as sportsmanship, academic achievements, and how long they’ve been part of YTA. All YTA students are encouraged to try playing in USTA Sanctioned tournaments and we are here to assist them navigate that sometimes confusing or overwhelming world of junior tennis competition.

When will the next session begin?

Generally, after-school programs begin at the start of the public school year and summer programs begin in June. See locations for specific starting times. Students may join after the start date with permission of the Site Director.

Are there volunteer opportunities for parents?

Yes, we encourage parents to volunteer. We often need help with a variety of things, from tutoring to helping on court, special events, etc. Click here to get to our volunteer page!
